I use a special foot when SID that has a small blade out in front that rides in the ditch and helps stitching straight(er). I think the technical name is "Edge-joining" foot, but I call it SID foot. Love your fun, bright quilt!

i'm seeing more decorative stitches used over the ditch. it can have a nice effect...even the simple zig-zag at a small width can look nice. no more ditch quilting for me its not fun and there are other options.

I'm afraid that my SITD has become "stitch sorta kinda close to the ditch, but don't obsess about it." Usually when the quilt is washed for the first time, most of the odd stitching seems to blend in. Sigh!

I use a serpentine wavy stitch and straddle the ditch. Since the stitch "wobbles" anyway, it helps to hide any of my "wobbles". I've converted a lot of other quilters to this method. Try it and see what you think.

The best method I've found for SITD is to use a vintage hand crank machine. I've used it on the last 3 quilts I've made and the stitches are nearly perfect. The machine I use is a 1914 singer 127. It's great..... beautiful stitches.
I know, it takes a little longer but the result is so much better than what I used to get. I only use that machine for straight stitches.... I use the 1952 Singer 15-91 for the FMQing that I do.
The fancy $$$$ Viking machine I have doesn't do as nice a job on the straight stitching or the FMQing..... even with the walking foot and darning foot. I'd really like to get a LA but don't have the room or the $$$$ for that. For special quilts, I hand quilt them but that takes months.

It amazes me that young moms now go for the contemporary design and color schemes. I really like your design and color selection and I especially like the back of your quilt. That makes it really stunning. STID is always a challenge. I don't know if this is a good tip for anyone but I do mine FMQ and it works for me.
