Is my idea too selfish?

No, you have nothing to feel guilty about. This is special, and needs to stay in the family. There will be other quilts for charity. It is wonderful that you care so much about those in need.

Do it!
As your signature says, "If you always do what you have always done, the results are your fault."
In this case, your result would be that you would always regret giving away quilts made from scraps from your Great-Grandmother.
By the way, there is no selfishness involved with deciding to make quilts for you and your family from the scraps. It's your way of being close to your Great-Grandmother, and sharing memories of her with your family. That's called LOVE!

I would say that this is by NO MEANS selfish - especially since you're wanting to "spread the love" by making gifts for all the other grand-kids. As a quilter, if my g-daughter was to do something like this at my passing, I would be very pleased.

One thing quilters always generate lots of is scraps. Usually we keep them because we're thrifty, but mostly because we can't bear to toss the fabrics we loved when we bought it. Your grandma loved those fabrics, and she wanted you to have them because she loved you. Keep them and keep the love going in the family. Remember the old saying: "charity begins at home." Our families should come first.

Absolutely not. Those scraps belong to you and you can do whatever you want to with them. It would be lovely to have those scraps made into a quilt that you could love and cherish. I think your GG would love the thought of your having a quilt from her scraps. It would be a family heirloom.
