I doubt there is an official report but there are hundreds of quilting and sewing blogs that have reviews of all different threads used for sewing. Long staple Egyptian cotton leads the reviews as being the best sewing thread.

It's late - so hopefully the quilt police are all asleep....i confess - i use all purpose mercerized cotton -polyester thread to sew and quilt with. I know that cotton threads can "dry rot" with time...and just figure the polyester gives it some extra "umf" to last......and i like it for my applique as well. Just seems to glide better. But...that's just me.

Superior Threads has a lot of information on all the different types/weights of threads,the best uses of the different threads and what needles work best with each different thread. They are a really good information resource

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. I have always used Mettler Silk Finished thread which is what my Bernina dealership advised me to use many years ago. My Bernina 1530 is still running smoothly. I never put a cheap grade of oil or gas in my car when I use to drive and I do the same with my DSM. Some of these newer models actually cost more than a down payment on a new car. YIKES !!!

Carrie Hargrave did her master's degree in studying thread and for her thesis, she compared threads for quality. I believe I have a chart from a class with Harriet Hargrave. I will try to find it over the weekend. Her research even changed Harriet's mind about at least one brand, and that's not an easy thing to do!
