How many of you, use a double layer of batting in your quilts.
I was thinking about trying this for the texture and warmth. any thoughts. Thank you!

I did it once to see how much better the quilting showed, it showed up wonderfully, it was not real stiff but it was not heavily quilted either but did not drape real well and is
WAY too warm for South Texas!

I have used a layer of cotton then wool. The quilting shows up wonderfully.

I would rather have the option of layering quilts on the bed than make one double thick quilt.

You can't beat a double batting for definition in quilting. I do a lot of double batted quilts. But I also live in the northeast so they are functional as well. Green Fairy does it a lot too, you can see pictures of her work on her blog (google it). It can give motifs a trapunto look if you quilt densely in the background. I quilt on a LA. I am thinking manipulating a double batted quilt in a DSM without the use of a frame will present challenges and definitely give you a work out with the added weight and density. If you are quilting on a frame (either LA, mid arm or DSM) a double batt is definitely something you can do. But if you are quilting on a DSM you may run out of room very quickly.

I have never tried it as I use Warm and Natural, and feel that if I need more warmth, I can just put on another quilt. However, the puffy ones that come in bags could really show the quilting wonderfully, if they are the high loft. I once saw a Log Cabin in a show and it looked striking. So thick and comfy. They may have done the double layer.

I have double batted but tied the quilt. Too warm for down here on Texas Coast like Kathy stated. I sent mine up north. When I tied the quilt, I tied according to directions as far as spacing but every other tie was clipped a little closer and tied on the back. Just a little neater look. IMHO.

Oh goodie...eventually (when I get some time) I have a king-size quilt I'm making for our bed and I'm planning a double-batting on it. And I'll be quilting it on my DSM. This will be interesting!

I have done double batting on a twin size quilt and fmq on my dsm witout any problems....not sure about anything bigger....you might also consider using flannel for the backing as it adds a lot of warmth.
