Definitely put freezer paper on the back, however, I like the Pentel Gel Roller for Fabric better than Pigma. I've never seen the wider Pigma that might work better. The .01 size is too thin. I get the Pentel on Amazon by the box because they work so well.

I did this for neice's wedding quilt. Used the pigma pens and backed the squares with freezer paper. But I used a Manila file folder, cut a hole the size of the finished blocks, marked the inside with pieces of masking tape the size of unfinished blocks. Slip the block into the folder, close it, hand to guest to sign. They have a visual that they will understand and no over lap to worry about. We used the blocks instead of a guest book, so had two folders going at the same time. Worked pretty slick.

I second the template idea, saves a lot of time instead of marking on each piece of fabric. Totally agree with using the freezer paper. In fact, you can leave the fabric the size of the freezer paper sheet and just draw the blocks on it without cutting them and cut them later.
Micron pens are great but expensive, especially if you want color ones. However, you can also buy permanent fabric markers in colors from craft stores that hold up extremely well to laundering for much less than the micron pigma pens. I have used Tulip fabric markers with good results after heat setting and following the package directions.

I've seen this tutorial and always thought that it is a cute idea for a shower.
Just make sure you get good quality spray (and use it outside)!

Pigma pens work best - I just made a signature quilt last week - here is a pic

I actually made the quilt, quilted it, bound it- then took it completed to the shower and had everyone sign it or write a note on it with the pigma pens. The momma loved it and she was able to take it home with her that day and read all the well wishes. Its a great keepsake.
