Steve - I have really enjoyed all of your posts showing all of your "finds" with the before and after pics. I find it so fascinating to see how you skillfully transform these interesting machines and so appreciate the info and tips that you pass on. It encourages me not to walk away from some of the "machines desperately in need" but to take the time and carefully determine if I can tackle it's restoration LOL!! I can hardly wait for Spring so that I can get into the garage and work on some of my projects

Steve, I'm so happy this machine found you....well with the help of mrs sewnsew! I love this forum...helping one another find our dream machines! Thank you for the tip about the flash. Hopefully my old brain will remember that neat trick when I need it. ;-)

Last night was fun.

The left side panels of the folding top would not go all the way vertical like they were supposed to. Unlike my Singer Folding top, on this one the top has cutouts for the side walls to drop into. It turns out that is because of the amazing amount of built up crud under it. The only way to clean it out right was to remove all of the panels.

These screws have not been removed in 140 years and they have been stored opened out in a barn for several decades. Removing them is a process of (a) Finding them, (b)excavating to the actual screw head, (c) cleaning out the slot, (d) very very gently apply as much force as I can to make them let go.

as found:

ready to remove: (one slip of the screwdriver caused that scrape....grrrrrr)

Free!!!!!!

This is a shot that shows 4 screws in the various states, Covered, excavated, slot cleaned, removed

I too love to read and see the step by step progress of your process on a piece. I cannot believe what great beauty and hopefully function can be found under all that ..... well, whatever the heck it is. Maybe it's better not to know! Also love the generosity that happens on the board especially with you antique guys and gals ..... I mean, antique machine guys and gals. Almost makes me want to move to CA because of all the great machines you find ... well, maybe not. Steve, the other machine might have been in so much better condition but now you can be proud that you have this one and are restoring it to some of it's former beauty. Otherwise, who knows where it might have ended up!!! I too will continue to watch it's ongoing unveiling with hopes of learning a thing or four.
