I think kristaks's post is spot on exactly like your mothers quilt. I don't think any of the others look 3D at all, but I'm still attempting to learn so it could just be my eyes

All the diamonds are the same size just different colours. Lone star patterns should help.

I also found it on Quilters Cache and many different colors on Pinterest. Looks like one I would like to try
