Thank you Cathy! That clears it up.

I have one of the first ones too, serial #NA005763. $40 at a thrift store in a nice walnut cabinet.

Thank everyone. I am still smiling about it a week later. Cari, that's great! Did you notify Ray on the Singer 301 site?

I have a 301A that I found in a salvation army store, in a French style cabinet for a total price of $32.00 and I do love sewing on this one........I was told that the A stands for the Singer company that used to be located in Anderson South Carolina..... so is that correct or not? His name is Andy and me, along with my other quilting buddies, all love to sew with him...........he is the knee control cabinet and we all like that too..........he is the solid tan color........

4dogs, you are possibly looking in the wrong spot for the serial number. It's underneath on these, towards the front.

Mine is also an early 301, I have two more that are 301A's

No not yet. I need to take a pic of it. Right now I'm back and forth between my Aunts house and my own, my 301s are there and I'm here, then stuff is here and I'm there, and so on. Eventually I will.
