I don't think they're common in the U.S. either. Most of the sweatshirts I have seen like this have had a quilt block or other quilting design appliqued to the surface by the owner. There are quite a few t-shirts with quilting motifs, though. Found this one by Googling:

I've found them at the K-Mart stores here in the US. I don't have any trouble with the fading and they last for years. Other than that if you have an embroidery machine make your own. That's what I'm doing now.

You reminded me of an old sweatshirt I once had. A quilt block (right side to wrong of shirt) was sewn to the inside of the shirt then quilted. You have to quilt 1/4" around the block design. Turn shirt back out and carefully trim out the sections around the stitching. It gives a stained glass look. I don't have that shirt anymore but maybe someone on this board can explain it better or provide a photo.
