I have beans in mine. They smell funny for a few months, but then the smell goes away with use. I put mine in the microwave for 99 seconds for about a cup of beans. Microwaves do not all act the same, so you'll have to experiment.

I buy flax seed at the bulk food store run by Mennonites. It's much cheaper that way. I think the kinds are dark or golden, buy don't know the difference, and don't think it makes any difference.
