I like the first one too unless, your two additional rows are blocks without the red. Then I would do the second one with a top and bottom row the same as the center blocks.

I myself see a great diagonal where the blocks with the whole red squares have a connection diagonally or the purple print would work.

if you want the focus to stay on the center square, the second is better.
