If the sides of your finished top are less than 100" wide, then your length of backing will simply be the length of the shortest side plus an extra 6" or so. There may be enough left over for the binding if the quilt is 90" or less. If not, add another 1/4 yard for binding strips.

All of your speedy replies are really wonderful!!!!! Thank you so much!!! My pattern indicates a finished size of 71"x71". Since it is an out of print Judy Neimeyer pattern I figured extra fabric would be a good thing. This is the Bird of Paradise quilt pattern. As I was unpacking from the most recent move- it re-appeared!!! All of the fabrics were in the package- I just need the background & binding. I'll worry about the backing later
Thank you one and all- will see which yardage gives me the best savings when I get to the quilt shop!!!
    Have a great day.

Sorry, but I'm wondering if you mean you need fabric to make the background of the quilt, as in the front of the quilt, part of the design or are you asking about making the quilt backing (the back of the quilt) and the binding? Sorry, I didn't read to the end of your post before posting this question. But now I wonder, could you really need 7.5 yards of background for a quilt this size? I've never done a Judy Neimeyer pattern so I don't know.

You say all the fabrics were in the package, so I assume you mean the backing fabric needed.

I figure 2 1/2 yds should be enough to provide backing ( with extra for LA quilting) and binding.

I believe she said background and binding.

Now I see you are making a Judy Niemeyer quilt. Is it batik fabrics in your package? Don't know that you can find a batik that wide but maybe. At least I haven't seen any but that doesn't mean too much.

3 yds should be more than enough. 3x36"=108"

My sister buys 3 yds of the 108 in. for her backings. she said way cheaper than buying the other and piecing.

I guess my fuzzy brain wasn't explaining as clearly as I thought. Anyway- I found my pattern & all of the bright fabrics packed in a container from previous moves. I bought the pattern, & fabrics for the front colors Not the Background, binding or quilt backing. This was done many years ago & I totally forgot I had it. I now want to make it up & just needed to know the conversion of narrow fabric to the wider 108" fabric for the background of the front of the quilt. The agreement of the replies suggest I need about 3 yards of the wide to do the Background & Binding. That sounds good to me. I'll worry about the backing when I get the top finished. I'm not worried too much about over buying the wider fabric as I can always find a use for 'left-overs'!!! Now to price compare.
May I extend a huge Thank You to all of you folks who replied with really good info. I so appreciate your help & the learning opportunities on this board. What a great resource for us all!

I believe it would be very hard to get straight cuts using that wide of fabric. Even those who sell it usually tear it to get it square when used for backing. However, you may be better at cutting than I am.
