I didn't realize that red was the traditional center of a log cabin block. Always learning something new here!

I would go with yellow, I feel red and/or yellow can signify the fire

A log cabin is a log cabin is a log cabin! Red may be the traditional choice for the center square but everyone knows a log cabin quilt when they see one. Go to Pinterest and type in "log cabin quilts".

I personally think you could find a good red to go with the purple and that would be my preference.

I'd use yellow--that is if you want it to pop.

I would try all the suggestions mentioned and see which one you like best. Personally, I like the idea of turquoise or lt. green with the purple.

It's up to you, but red for tradition, or to be modern silver grey, and must admit I am a fan of yellow. Let us see what your block turns out like, we'd love to know what you chose.

So many things to think about! Thanks, everyone, I certainly am going to audition various colors. I will let you know what I decide.

Why not red? I made a disappearing 4-patch quilt recently with reds and purples and it came out great. Remember the "Red Hat Ladies" theme? It was red and purple. Here's a pic of my red/purple quilt to give you an idea how the 2 colors go together.
