I do think you may have to play with the strips to see which you like best. I'd go with a dark inner border (background fabric) to "stop" the lighter colors that come to the edge, maybe 2 1/2 inches instead of 4, and then the 1 or 1 1/2 inch light or medium purple, then the four inch outer border.
However you finish it, you have created a stunningly beautiful quilt! Congratulations on it, and all your careful work!

Hi dina!
Oh man this came out so nice! Wow you really nailed it with your coloration.
Here is my suggestion for what it is worth. With art, if you are painting a scene, a darker shade is to represent standing nearer to an object. So I would go with the dark purple to make you feel as though you were looking into the design. If possible you could graduate the border from the dark to light for the inside. That would be really cool in my eyes.
But as always, I would audition the border before applying it. That way you are getting the effect you want. The opposite would be to be the dark to the light saying you are standing farther away and it is too. Dark being the first color to the light on the outside. (Or last border color on the outside.)
See where I am going here? Is the background black or blue? It could have the same effect but calmer if you use that color as the border gradation to frame it and not distract from the center design, but to insinuate it is either farther away or closer to the viewer.

Beautiful top. My first thought was to vary it. Have 2 inner borders with a dark purple wide outer border. With the 2 inner narrower borders I would make reflect the pattern. Example - lower right side would start with a light purple, then a medium purple with a wide dark purple outer border. But further up the right side I would switch (perhaps with a small HST square) so that a medium purple would be the inner border with the light purple being the second border and continuing with the dark purple outer one. I would do just the opposite on the left side. This pattern would reflect the bargello colors. The top and bottom would have the inner border the 'other' color than that touches it. If you wanted to not add much length , then I would only have the one inner border and the top and bottom and complete with the larger dark purple outer border. Just the first impression I got. Please post your finished product, I'm sure whatever you go with will frame it perfectly.

Thanks. Who know, I may go with my favorite border, which is an inner light one and an outer dark one. I just haven't had time to play yet, and I thought I might try something different for this one. I like the chevron idea above, but I don't have enough fabric for that.
