I think if they are teaching a class they should be paid for their time and preparation. To expect this to be their "contribution" is ridiculous. What about the lazy members who only show up without ever volunteering to do anything or never volunteering to tke a turn at being an officer? That gipes me!

When I was a member of a guild, I was asked to teach a couple of different classes based on projects I showed during show and tell and I was not compensated, but the guild charged the members who attended. The guild did this with members for a number of years when money was tight. When they had the funds, they brought in nationally known teachers and paid part of the fee with guild money and members paid the rest, but they reserved 5 seats for folks who had taught classes for free -- I got to take some really good classes for free that way.

We have some very gifted guild members and when we ask them to do a program or teach a workshop we pay them exactly what we pay all our other speakers. Only place where we save is that we don't have to provide overnight housing in a hotel. Nearly all the speakers we bring in request a hotel rather than a private home. Totally understanding as they want some downtime at the end of the day.

We do not pay guild members to teach. It is considered a service to the group. Our leader often will suggest someone teach a technique to the group but there is not restriction on who teachers. Most who "teach" will do a 10 - 15 minute tutorial rather than a full meeting of instruction or lead a retreat session. We try to keep it casual and low pressure for guild members who may not be comfortable with the "teaching" role but who have good skills or ideas to share.

For my $250, I would want more than 40-50 minutes of a trunk show of antique quilts....more power to whomever she is.........
