This is a great idea, but I am confused as to what to use for the seam line: the one on top (the smaller piece) or the seam line on the bottom one, that is, drawing a new 1/4 " line on the top piece which would be 1/4" from the bottom's cut line?

When I have triangles like that, I sort of compromise - I "average" out the seam allowance for the two pieces.

Since it's going to be trimmed anyway, I use the larger one (in this case the one on the bottom) as the guide.
