i'm late to the comments--but i use a pan scraper from pampered chef. it's small, it's got rounded edges, but the sides are tapered enough to get it under the pulltab, and lift it up. i've found the same thing in the kitchen supplies at dollar stores, drugstores, and the local "big mart", too. (and i can scrape pans with it, too. not a bad deal.)

A multi-purpose gadget it is .... I use mine for finger pressing seams at the sewing machine!

Thanks, Jan! I had no idea there was such a thing. I hate the pull tabs because those cans are often designed so that they don't cut easily with a can opener, and in addition to the sharp edges on the pulled lids, they leave a tiny sharp rim around the top of the can that can cut you if you're trying to wipe the can out for recycling. Also, they prevent you from getting the dog food (or whatever) out easily, and will nick our nice silicone spatula or scratch our knife. grrr.

This is the one I use, I have sever Rheumatoid arthritis in 90% of my body it works for me. And small enough to store.

For the soup cans and other regular size cans with a ring pull, I find a wooden spoon handle works well. But I like the looks of that purple puller gadget.
Plastic packages really frustrate me. Ketchup packets, plastic utensil packages, flimsy water bottles where the lid is so small you can't grasp it. If I am at home, I have things to use to help: jar openers, scissors, knives, but when "away" I'm on my own.
