How do you make a quilt with orphan blocks of different sizes and designs?

sashing/borders on some sides of some blocks , graphing out on paper and then adding blocks/fabric where needed - I've done it a few times and also have thrown the blocks up on my design wall and played until i got a pleasing set and then added where needed and sewed together as I went -- yes, there were some Y/partial seams at times, but those aren't too hard once you get the hang of them

Do try to have some larger blocks made up of smaller ones, so that you have some straight lines. If you parsed those two quilts you could see the larger irregularly sized blocks....

When I've done it, I plan it out on graph paper and add filler-in fabric pieces or blocks as needed. It goes together like a puzzle, in chunks rather than row by row.

if the orphans are evenly divisible you can piece them together without sashing. For example this quilt I made with 12" blocks, 6" blocks and 6" x 12" blocks

But this T-shirt quilt I had some odd sizes so had to piece in background of different sizes to make it all fit properly. I was able to disguise it by giving it a shadow box look.

In this video she uses several different ways of making odd shaped blocks go together. This was my third quilt I ever made and it was so much fun.

I would also recommend Sharyn Craig's book "Setting Solutions" she gives lots of ideas about what to do with different size blocks. Look in your library or you can get an inexpensive used copy on amazon

I've made a couple of these quilts using sashing and borders of 2" sqs and plain strips, but there was quite a bit of math and organization needed.

I found it really helped to lay the blocks out on my design wall so that I could see where I needed to add filler blocks. Don't have access to my photos today to show an example, but I added 9-patches, zig-zag half-squares and flying geese in those areas in addition to the sashings described above.

Or are you talking about blocks that are "supposed" to be all one size and are varying sizes?
