I bet this explains why sometimes the thread is nice and sometimes its a snarly mess. I know I've lost track of which end is which, and I usually knot the cut end. Very interesting.

Since I usually thread my needle before cutting it off the spool, I knot the end I cut.

I recently read an article on how thread goes onto a spool and that using it in the direction as it comes off the spool helps reduce snags or other issues so I, too, just started paying attention about a month or two ago. I have actually noticed a difference in hand sewing binding and appliqué.

I do the same. I find that regular thread doesn't tangle if done that way. Got in the habit after reading an article and now I do it by habit for all threads.

I too knot the cut end. Also, I take the threaded needle and thread and run through an unused Bounce sheet.
