It is a 9 patch block. Just not your "typical 9 patch". You can see it if you separate the block into 3 rows horizontally and vertically.

Excluding the "border" count the small square, long strip, small square in 1st row, that equals three, the second row is the longer strip, the square, and longer strip equals 3, and that brings us back to the small square, longer strip and small square in the 3rd row and that makes up the 9 patch.

The name makes no sense to me either, but I guess if you come up with the design, you can name it what you want.

9-Patch can come in equal or unequal styles. The equal 9-patch is the most common with 9 equal squares. The unequal 9-patch can be hard to see - like this one. As someone has already said, if the block can be divided into 3 across and 3 down it’s a 9-patch. Way back in the dinosaur days we learned how to look at quilt block to determine how to draw templates for that block. Jimmy Beyer has a wonderful book on quilt, blocks - my,original one came with clear overlays of all the various types of blocks. The second version is in color (big yes!!) but I’m out of town and just don’t remember if it came with The overlay - I would think it did though. I’m glad I started quilting in 1979 when we learned so much more than is taught todaymin beginner classes.

Sandy in Mooresville, NC - but visiting in York, PA - yes the snow kept me from attending AQS Lancaster until Thursday - I always go on Wednesday.

The basic block inside the larger block is a 9-patch and the larger block is nested around it - at least this is how I see it.
