What a wonderful (new to me) method...I will have to give it a try on my next table runner. There is one runner that I make that does suggest birthing. Thank you for sharing.

I usually make queen or king sized quilts, Seems to me that my opening would have to be MUCH larger than the 4 inches that was suggested, lol

Why would anyone want a hand sewn seam the length of a quilt, when you can birth a quilt through a small opening at the side or end of the quilt and then sewn shut where it is less noticeable? If is a wall hanging, OK.....but not for a usable quilt.

When birthing anything closed I stitch first on the backing and front on the seam to be left open. Then I sew around the edges leaving the previous stitching open. After I have turned the item right side out I now have lines to match for sewing the two together. Works especially well if you have batting on one side and not the other as in rug mats or placemats.

Note the small size of the project. She's talking about a 4" opening, which doesn't need to be hand sewn closed because it would be quilted shut. I don't think that size is meant for a large quilt.

Interesting - will definitely be trying this on smaller projects.

I don't see why it couldn't be used for a larger quilt. Just make the opening larger. You aren't hand sewing it shut, just pressing the 1/2" seam allowance to one side and allowing your quilting to keep it closed.

Birthing a quilt... where do they come up with these terms? In either case, it sounds labor intensive... LOL

Good idea, I always make a binding and no birthing.

I hadn't heard of this either - when I've birthed items I've usually left an opening at the end. This sounds so much cleaner. Thanks for posting!
