Woo hoo! I was piecing today and put a piece in the wrong place. Without really thinking it trough, I gave it a big tug and bingo! It ripped out with no problems. I have no idea who Ricky Sims is but I’m a fan.

My favorite technique is to have a good quality and sharp seam ripper. I hold the seam between my thumb and finger and slide the ripper carefully along the closed seam and zip it is done. This works on most fabrics, not all, I do a quick sample. If the fabric does not allow the threads of the seam easily, I use the cut every 3/4 stitches method.

Seam rippers don't work well for me. I use tiny sharp scissors or a new tool that I just bought from a speaker we had at our guild. It's just about the size of a tracing wheel but has an angled serrated edge. It is SO fast. Don't know the name of it lol.

I snip about every 2 inches. Then with a hemostat I grab the tread and pull. It goes pretty quickly. The bobbin thread always seems to pull out easier. A hemostat is a medical tool used to clamp blood vessels. They used to be disposable so one day when I was working I grabbed one that hadn't been used and was going to be thrown away (lots of waste in the medical world). I've been using it ever since. They might even have them on Amazon.

There is a lot of interesting info on line about ripping seams. Google in “ how to use a seam ripper”. Especially is one pictures of the ripper with the red ball on the point. If you position the ripper with red ball down, it won’t cut the fabric.

Depends on the seam. Sometimes I use a seam ripper [if I can find it], other times I have the scalpel seam ripper, and my old stand by is the old "shick injector blades".....the ones you can't buy anymore in the grooming section. However, they are in the painting department for other uses and at the Harbor Freight in bulk.
We used the blades years ago when making professional drapes.
