I do not buy 3 yards but always buy at least 1 yard or if super sale like $2 yd might buy 2 yards. Like you when purchasing fabric usually do not have a project in mind. I have much more fabric than you...room full...because I like to just get up one morning and pick an inspiration for a project (almost never follow a pattern completely.) I then go to my very large stash (which is always very good fabric bought on sale) and make what I have do for the project. To me this is the fun of making the quilt or tote or placemat. I consider myself better at design and color than actual quilting. I do a lot of straight line and medium size blocks. I do try to do a Bonnie Hunter quilt each year because it forces me to do a small block quilt for a change...I never follow her pattern completely either...lol. The quilt is usually throw size and not queen. I love all the suggestions on this board and pictures.

I have apparently been "bitten by the same bug." When I was working full time, I did not have time to quilt, but I surely did have time to buy fabric on the weekends for "when I retire." Guess what! I am semi retired, and I have enough fabric stashed that I could not use up if I lived to be 120. I am trying my best not to buy any more fabric until I use up some of this.

what control & organization! No, I'm more like SusieQOH--I buy for a project and then once it's done, I'm ready to move on to another color & design. I do scrappy also--especially string quilts, so having left overs all over the place is good. I try not to buy fabric without a project in mind--the exception is when I'm traveling and I see a fabric that I don't see at the 3 LQS in my county. (for instance, none carry Art Galley Fabrics). That said--I have plenty of fabric stashed!

I do tend to get tired of some fabrics, but I just put the leftovers away and they go in another quilt in the future.

I love extra scrappy quilts, so purchase in very small quantities. A yard is a lot in my book. Occasionally, I'll buy 2-5 yards of something on super sale, with the intention of using it for borders or backing. My LQS sells scraps in little cellophane bags marked at very low prices, so i've been know to buy a 3 inch strip of fabric, or a bag miscellaneous scrap bits of a fabric line. eventually, they all make it into a quilt. I can use 2 inch squares for English paper piecing, so very little is wasted here.

Once I fell for 'merry and bright' line of fabrics. I usually buy yardage, but they only had 1 fabric so I bought 3yards of that, 2 jelly rolls and 2 charm packs and a panel that was blank in the middle. They were Christmas UFOs because I couldn't decide the style of star on one and the middle of the panel on the other. I will show images later.

My DH bought me bundle off fat quarters so I made these two with not much left over, except for maybe a few doll quilts. Love them.

Tamaratjo, you are a girl after my own heart. I'm so afraid of running out that I have (in my richer past) bought the entire bolt. I have a family of yellow and black, red and black, Fresh Lilac and several bolts of plain, navy, yellow, red, lime green, purples galore, etc. Once I bought 100 yards of neutral, off white, white, tone on tone, misc. He sent me 20 different ones with 5 yards of each. I loved it. A lot of that is gone now. I'm never tired of the fabric or color because the pattern and usage make it look different. I'm a real sucker for Deb Beeves fabric, Stonehenge, Blank Quilting and now the Quilted Twins from Florida have my attention.

I buy the whole bolt (if it’s a bargain) then cut it into kits for church projects. We have a generous budget for charity sewing.

I love scrappy quilts but I think every quilter has a different love of how they keep their fabrics whether it be bins and bins full of fabrics or just buy what they need for one particular quilt. I give you a lot of praise for your control of purchasing fabrics which I have no control what so ever. Sounds like you really have wonderful goals in purchasing fabrics.
