I take the bottoms of my machines off about once a year. It's Amazing how much lint and debris gets back in there. I've taken my Bernina and my Juki apart, cleaned and oiled. It's a messy job but So satisfying. I only take the bottom off - there aren't any electronics down there to get in the way and that's where most of the dirt is I think. I clean and oil the bobbin area every time I change the bobbin.

No canned air. Use tweezers to get between the feed dogs and then the brush that came with the machine. Also a drop of sewing machine oil on the tip of the Qtip will collect a lot of lint that otherwise may escape. I'll bet you could almost hear a sigh of relief from your machine when you cleaned it!!

Looks just like the bobbin area of my Janome 7700, except for the lint, because she Will Not! Sew for me with even a fraction of that. I am working with corduroy at the moment, and have to clean out the lint even before emptying each bobbin. My older Bernina was my first lint-averse machine. Before that I had always sewn on Singers (Featherweight and Touch and Sew) that didn't seem to care. I think our newer machines are all more sensitive.

Pipe cleaners, small pick and tweezers as well as long wooden q tips. The wooden q tips work well to clean my handgun.
