I used to consider it finished when the binding was done, until the last quilt I "finished" and dubbed "Technical Difficulties" because it gave me fits all the way through, decided it wasn't done yet and now I'm appliqueing pieces onto it with great difficulty that could easily have been pieced when it was just a top.
So, I must say that no quilt is finished until it tells me so.

I currently have two tops pieced and am waiting to find the perfect backing...so these aren't finished to me. Realize that different strokes for different folks applies here, but I really love seeing the completely finished product because how it's quilted can really enhance what we make. Please don't tell me I'm alone in this feeling?
Mine are finished when they are no longer in my home. I do mostly charity quilts.

I agree that it's not finished until it doesn't need another stitch, but I totally accept that people who have reached a milestone such as completing the piecing might want to show us, and I'm happy to see a work in progress. I enjoy seeing the process as well as the ultimate achievements.

Had to laugh...no one mentioned that the quilt was finished (after washed and dried) and when the sewing room was picked up and back in order again.

I consider my quilts finished when they are layered, quilted, binding finished and washed. I don’t always put a label on as most of my quilts are given to charity. The guild puts their own label on as well as the church that I donate quilts to. If I am making as a gift for someone, I add a personalized label when sewing the binding on. I always wash the quilts whether donated, gifted, or not.

Bound, washed, and dried is when they are finished.
