How much fabric do you cut off with your selvages? I'm gonna start saving mine.

Have you an idea of what you will be doing with the selvedges? Check out some 'selvedge' tutorials on line and perhaps sew a test piece to see what effect you prefer.

Do you only want to see the white selvedge part or do you want a strip of coloured fabric between each selvedge? As the selvedges are overlapped, rather than seamed, you don't lose very much when they are sewn together. I would love to hear what others do.

I always cut 1.5" away from the edge. Some of the edges are fuzzy so I measure from the solid part to allow plenty of the colored part to show. I love making things with selvages!

I do not use the salvages but I give them to two gals in my guild that make stunningly beautiful quilts. One will not use those with fuzzy edges, the other doesn't care. I always cut 1 inch from where the color starts. That seems to be OK for them.

I save them and cut at 1 1/4". Also measure like Mkotch (above). Made curtains for my sewing room from salvages!

With all the discussion I think I am going to join you in saving salvages. I have most likely tossed hundreds of pounds of salvages over the years. Reading here gives me a good idea on what to do. I think I would have to be more careful on fabrics going out with swaps however since you want to be exact or better on the dimensions being sent out. Also do you wash the fabric first before cutting to save the salvages?

I cut right on the white but then I use them to make clothesline baskets. If you intend to sew with them, Mkotch has the right idea to cut 1.5" away, then you would have plenty of seam allowance.

Lynnie 25 has a a great tutorial, but you need to check out her selvedge pictures. When you click on her name in the thread, a drop down box will appear. Click on "view profile". Go to "started threads" and you will find all the threads she has posted. Her selvedge pics usually has the word selvedge in the name of the thread. Enjoy.

Sewing Selvedges

I have made a couple of small waste baskets for one's sewing room, wrist pin cushions from the small strips, a sewing machine cover, small bags, a large needle case, a sewing machine "apron" I have a big box full that I want to make this quilt with it.

I leave about an inch or two so you can see the fabric along with the selvage. I have a ton of them but haven’t made anything with them yet.
