What if you marked the yardage on a piece of paper then hand basted a couple of stitches through the paper? If the paper were folded, it probably wouldn't tear as easily.

I love Juliasb's idea using the tak gun. I have one and never thought of using it to label my fabric. Thank You for a great idea. You gave me one of those "ah ha moments".

Easiest method I've found ... painters tape has become my best friend in my quilting room, and all round the house! And to think ... I don't even paint!

I bought 3x5 index cards and took them to FedEx Kinkos and had them use the large guillotine paper cutter to cut into 1/4 or even 1/8 sizes.
I use comic book backing boards to wrap my fabric on and put a printed return (the small label) address label. My labels are printed with the following info:

FQ / F8 / HALF
Yd_______ In______

I place one of these labels on the cut piece of index card and circle or write in the size of fabric. I tape that piece of index card to the edge of the backing board. so when I'm looking for fabric for a project I can see if I have enough to complete that project before getting my heart set on fabric only to discover half way through that I don't have enough to complete it.

What I have done & still have many yards to do is I bought comic boards, the smaller size white price tags, cut the string off (or you could leave it on ) wrote the amount of yardage on the price tag & used a small pin to put in the hole & pin it to the fabric. I cut the string because for me it is easier to see the price tag that way then by the string moving around. Now if I could just get the rest of my stash organized like that!

Anything that is at least 1 yard, I fold on the larger sized Polar Notions boards (like Comic boards). If it's less than 1 yard, I fold it on those fat quarter-sized boards. That way, it's an easy glance to see what is less than a yard and what's more than a yard. I haven't gotten past that. Wondering if the Blue Painters Tape would work? We use that to designate the size of Project Linus quilts. But, don't know if the "glue" would mar the fabric.
