Does a nyone know if the vintage Singer Stylist 538 is a good machine? I'm looking for a good used machine for my granddaughter. Thanks.

This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. I would not buy a Singer Sewing machine that was made from the 1970's to now. I have no experience with that particular model, though. It might serve her well for a while, depending on how well it's been maintained and stored. I would not pay over $50.00 for it, though.

I have a Singer Stylist 534 which would likely be a slightly less fancy model than yours, no cams, and it sews really well. I have used it to sew heavy canvas and through at least 2 layers of webbing material on backpacks. It does have plastic/rubber gears, so when they break it goes, but I'll keep using it until then. If you get it make sure it is cleaned up really well before using, and don't pay a lot of money for it, less than $50 for sure.
