I am in 100% agreement with the advice from Cashs Mom. I used Rubbermaid sweater boxes for my last move 19 years ago. Absolutely no damage - stains or odors - even after several years of storage for a few. I still use them for visible storage - so easy to identify the contents. Good luck with your move!

This is what I did the last time I moved (23 years ago). All the dishes and crystal was packed in my fabrics.

I would use plastic totes as cardboard boxes could get wet and therefore recreate mold.

I will suggest ripping an old sheet into 2” or 3” strips top to bottom. When boxes are packed lay a strip across the box, bring to underside, cross underneath and come up to the top again on the opposite ends. Tie in a knot & cut off excess. All 4 sides of box are securely anchored closed. The sheet makes a handle & you can carry one box in each hand.

I just moved. All my quilting stuff got moved in plastic totes. A good deal of it had been stored for long periods in them prior to the move.

I moved out of state a few years ago. We were renting while house hunting so I had no idea how long my fabric would be in storage. I used medium sized moving boxes and marked all "Do not store on the ground." Our storage unit stayed dry but I wasn't taking chances. Since all the fabric boxes were kept off the floor I had no problems. If you are using a mover, ask them if they can put cardboard on the floor of your storage unit. It helps keep everything from being damaged. It was over a year before I unpacked my fabric, and it was in perfect condition.

Hopefully I won't have it 'stored' anywhere but in the room it will end up in. My move will be local in one of the surrounding towns, so it will go directly from the sold house to the new house. The only one possibility is that it will have to remain in the movers truck over night for the closing day delivery. House needs to be empty for the final walk thru for the new owners. I was able to get boxes (cardboard) bolt length, so I won't have to fold my fabric. Some of my bolts hold 15 yards. I'm planning on keeping my fabric in projects, like I have it in my cabinets. Then unpacking will be a snap. I usually only buy fabric with projects in mind, so when I put it in my cabinets, the project fabric is all together.

I think the way you pack and store your fabric depends upon where they will be stored more than the how. I love the idea of using fabric to wrap breakables. I've done that lots of times.

But I did have to store the entire house several years back and I was so glad that I packed the fabrics in plastic totes. The floor of the storage unit got wet due to a very heavy rain and things in cardboard got damaged. I had to throw out several quilting books.... hated losing those.

If you'll store in one place while being in another, you won't be able to check on things. Think ahead! Plan wisely.

We're moving across the nation and don't know moving date or have a place at the other end.

Working on stash for many years to downsize. Have given thousands of yards for charity quilts, quilts and kits. Having purged this way, I've refined what I want to make in the future. Off to the thrift store is everyting not cotton or rayon. Thinking a new wardrobe may be necessary, I've chosen fashion fabric and quilt fabric. I had way too many planned purchases that never made it to the execute stage. I think there's wisdom in purchasing for a project, one at a time.

The first purge was into 4 lg/heavy boxes and many totes. The rest for sale. The current purge is brutle. Two large/heavy boxes and 5 totes are now 2 totes. I'm considering using that for packing material. Also been purging linen closets into useful and packing material. I'd rather use things I want to keep as packing material than move something I plan to get rid of.

Since we don't know how long and where all this will be stored, I'd like it in plastic not cardboard. Cardboard goes into the compost pile. Plastic lasts forever. Just think of all that poly we wore in the back then that went out of style but never wore out.

It's a process. Glad to be truely into this than the last time we moved. I think I was mentally in a bad state and someone had to move me. Loving daughter was very kind. But it hurt us both mentally. She's checking on me frequently and I send her reports. Like, "cleaned out the cloths in guest closet."

Love family and friends. They're the hardest to leave behind. The rest is stuff.
