I also do the same as Tartan whether it is scrappy or not. But I also call my husband in to look at what threads I have laid out and he often sees it a little differently than I do and we usually go with his suggestion. Shhhh don't tell him he is usually right. I have tried to convince him for 47 years that I am usually right.

My favorite & used most often is Aurifil Dove, a light gray, great for FMQ, blends in well. Of course not suitable for everything but what I try first.

variegated - I have some that is shades of a base color (red, green, blue) and others that are rainbow, in both bright and pastels. I'll use a neutral on the back, as the variegated are usually rather spendy threads.

If I've already decided on a solid border, then I'll consider matching that.

On a scrappy quilt I use a medium gray. It brings life to the front and the back of the quilt in my opinion.

I like to use a variegated thread on busy, scrappy, colorful quilts.
