Totally unnecessary IMHO. I stick a pin through the needle eye to adjust it to the angle I want.

My longarm came with 2 of them. I keep them on the top of my thread stand.

My sewing machine guy gave me one. He recommends using one for longarm needles....he says it's easier to see the position of the eye relative to the shaft. I haven't changed my needle yet so I can't say if I like it or not....yet

yep, I like them. Makes it easier to make sure the needle eye is positioned correctly as my long arm needle does not have a flat side. The end of the magnet just positions itself on the grove of the needle straight. No fiddling with trying to insert a pin into the eye and possibly nicking the eye of the needle causing the thread to fray.

I use the old needle stuck in the eye to set mine.

There are some quilters that often will run their longarm needles at a slight angle, For them it may be helpful. I actually thread my needle before inserting it into the long arm and using the thread to determine if it is in straight.

btw ..... I too would loose it in the first day I owned it!!
