Newbies challenge

I'm up for adoption! I may be sixty-something but am a newbie quilter. So far I have made one quilt top (years ago) and am currently working on my first charity quilt. I can use all the help I can get, especially since I have to machine quilt this one and get it mailed by May 1! I won't even mind being "adopted" by someone half my age!

General quilting question if anyone can help (I hope this question makes sense) I am hopeless at geometry so here is what I am having trouble with. I want to put my square on point. how do I figure out what size the 4 triangles need to be? I know the geometric formula for figuring the third side of a right triangle but the math of 3 1/4" squared, yada yada, makes my eyes cross. Is there a simpler way?

I've been reading for a while but never joined. I would love to be "adopted" too! I made 2 quilts so far. One was just random 5" squares in teals & purples in memory of my grandma. The 2nd quilt was based on Letitia Hutchin's Summer Dreams with swans on the water-turned out really pretty. I also volunteered to make quilts out of my grandma's clothes for my mom, aunts & uncle. the books of "Elm Creek" by Jennifer Chiaverini got me started. I am going to start a Eleanor Burns Log Cabin beginning class next week too. Sorry this is long-just wanted to get my history out there. I love this forum.

Jolo & Letsquilt, I will be delighted to have a quilting sister and mentor. I will be needing some insight when I get my blocks all trimmed to an equal size and start putting the whole thing together. Fortunately it will be about 40"x48" (I hope!) and should be a good size to try machine quilting. I can't imagine trying to do a larger one with my sewing machine. After seeing all of the longarm, midarm, etc. quilting machines at the AQS Quilt Show today, I am beginning to think I am out of my mind to try machine quilting!
