I believe he announced this because he is on tour and his performances have been a little suspect. A friend of mine attended a concert and reported that he seemed to be under the influence of alcohol. Others at same concert agreed. A week or so later this announcement came out. It is sad.

I would think that it would give him some comfort to have one last tour. Who knows what his financial state is as well, maybe he needs to do it to ensure quality care in the future.
I loved Wichita Linesman when it came out, way back in the day.
PS Just read the message before mine. That does make a lot of sense. Look at the scrutiny all performers are under these days. Good idea to head off any rumors.

Took care of my dear MIL for years while I watched her decend into oblivion. Eventually had to put her in a care facility. We were very close and I loved her like a sister. My word for family and friends, do not leave it all up to one person to take care of a Alz. person. Kick in and help, let them know you are there to give them a break. It can wear one down if they feel like they are rowing that boat all alone. She has gone on now and I never regret a minute with her even when she couldn't remember who the heck I was. The only thing I do regret is that I made her a quilt and after she was gone, was gathering up her possessions at the care facility and someone had stolen the quilt that was to go on to her daughter.
