How big do you make your baby quilts?

I would say think about what type of use you would like it to get as well. I had two baby quilts - one was a smaller square and one was crib size. The smaller one became my "blankie" and was taken everywhere. The larger one was used more as I got older and as a "throw-size" quilt when I got my own bed.

Mothers are advised these days not to put any blankets or quilts inside the crib with the baby, so the crib size doesn't matter. (I wonder sometimes how our babies survived, when we knew so little about how to care for them.) The quilt will probably be used in the stroller, in the car, as a play mat - and bigger is usually better.

I like to make mine bigger so the baby can use it later on. As others have mentioned, crib size batting 45 x 60 so I usually aim for somewhere near that. For me, quilt size is something like the Pirate's Code ala Pirates of the Caribbean - more of a guideline.

45x60 is a very useful size. It's big enough to fit a baby bed, will cover a toddler, makes a great floor quilt and goes into the car. The quilt top you have made is cute as a bug and it really won't be much trouble to add some blocks and a border to get it up to size. froggyintexas
