Since that one has been in the family for years - I'd suggest they go slap up the person that ruined the Domestic cabinet - and also find out what happened to the Domestic machine head.
I paid $185 for a really nice Domestic in that style cabinet - without all the "updates" that one has.

the irons are first removed from the cabinet
then they are disassembled.
drawers are removed to secure individually
Then the head is shipped in one box, the cabinet in another, and the irons in a third. (If there is a coffin lid it ships SEPARATE (never put head inside coffin lid)
When I ship Irons I put a layer of cardboard, then foam, then iron part, tie the irons to the cardboard with soft string(punch holes on either side of iron at arch tie point) then next layer of cardboard, etc until done.

Just shipping a 35lb head from coast to coast is around $40. USPS just made a huge price increase and I think Fed Ex or UPS is the way to go these days. No matter how you cut it shipping is a big part of the overall cost so the question is "How should it be safely shipped", which Steve answered, rather than "How can it be reasonably shipped."
You can also try Treadle On, they can sometimes transport machines for their members to their shindigs which are held all over the country.

100% correct.
I assume $100-$150 per treadle
I assume $50 per head
I have paid more for shipping on a machine or two than I paid for the machine....
I just had the two hand crank machines shipped, The Jones Serpentine and the W&G were $47 and $42 respectively for USPS, over $50 each with UPS or FedX (according to the seller)
