You pull down on the drawer pulls to open it. The drawers and cupboards are just decorative. This one opens sideways, because if it opened long ways it would hit our ceiling fan.

Just got the info from DH - he got the plans and hardware from www.murphybed.com. He used Luan wood. Yep - don't know that that is either!
