Thank you. Miriam, great information, just what I need. I have not named him yet. I talk to him each time I am cleaning and keep calling him guy. so it is a him.

That screw is actually controlling the clearance for the needle thread as well as holding the bobbin positioning finger in place. It's labelled "EE" in Singer's diagrams.
