Newbie needing machine advise

If you need to, you can always tape a thin piece of cardboard over your feed dogs...leave the cardboard loosely on top of the feed dogs..and tape the edges securely...this will allow them to move and you can FMQ just fine that way.
As for a new machine...you didn't mention your price range...but both singer and brother have machines out now for just over $100.00 U.S. that have so many bells and whistles...the best being the auto pilot..(ability to sew without the foot pedal!!) and the built in stitch regulator for FMQ...I bought a Singer and have been having a ball...I love the auto pilot and the stitch regulator...good luck, and welcome!!
