At the quilt guild I belong to there is a donation table just for items like what you have described. Members can take anything on the table for free. I thought that was a great idea for them to think of doing that. Is there a guild near you you could donate them to?

Many guilds around me have libraries, some quite extensive and would appreciate a donation of books.
