Go to programs, then the accessories folder, then system tools and you'll find a whole charactor map with all sorts of stuff.

Mine did the same thing if I used the number keys above the "qwerty" alphabet keys. However, when I used the numbers on the number pad, it worked for me. Might want to try that. However, after reading further down in the post I found how to get to a whole lot of special symbols. Now to remember how to get there when I need it.

I do not have the number pad on the side..only on the top.

Did you look in system tools to see if you have a character map?
