I have been researching starting plants in the paper egg cartons and was wondering if anyone has done so, and what your experience is? Do they work good? I think it would be a lot less expensive using the cartons I have saved up then going out and purchasing a bunch of new cups.

I have done this alot-just use the cardboard ones-I started them in the trays-putting a few seeds in each one, then thinned as necessary. When you get ready to transplant, I soaked the egg carton well, then just tore off the sections and placed the whole "cup" in the ground (or pot). Simple!

Thank you very much, Vanuatu Jill, I think I am going to give it a shot and see if I can make a go of it.

That sounds like a wonderful and economical way to start plants. I'm going to try this.

It worked great for me-I did mostly herbs, but also some border flowers started that way. Keep the egg trays on somesort of tray to catch water run-off, and it will help keep them moist between waterings. When you are ready to transplant them, loosten up the cardboard a little (slightly tear it in a couple of spots-should be easy since you've soaked it) to allow the roots to spread out in the soil. The cardboard will eventually just bio-degrade in the soil. Good luck

We used them for the kiddos to start flowers for Mother's Day at Mother's Day Out a couple of years ago. Worked great!

I used a 50 count pack of small drinking cups. It only cost $.88 and is working great! Good luck with your plants!
