How To Use And Care For Your Scissor and Shears

You'll want to take care of your scissors and shears in order to preserve their sharp cutting and smooth feel. Follow the tips below to extend the life and maintain the excellent performance of your scissors and shears:

1. Try to use the correct item for the task at hand - selecting the right tool insures optimum performance. Use for a task outside design limitations can produce poor results and cause damage.

2. Never force a cut if you sense resistance - this can disturb the setting of the blades. If you cannot cut easily through the material you are trying to cut you may be using the wrong tool for that task or your scissors or shears may need to be sharpened.

3. Avoid putting your scissors or shears in a place where they may be knocked off the work surface and fall to the floor. Dropping almost always damages the cutting edges. Return your scissors or shears to a protective sheath or case when not in use.

4. Take care in placing your pins to keep them out of the way of the cutting line - cutting over hard metal or plastic objects will damage the cutting edges.

5. Maintain the good feel and smooth cutting action of your scissors or shears by carefully wiping the inside surfaces of the blades free of accumulated lint.

6. Occasionally place a drop or two of household oil at the assembly point of your scissors and shears to facilitate a smooth cutting action When storing your scissors and shears for a long time, apply a very light coating of oil to the blades and edges to help prevent rust. If you live in a coastal or humid environment you will need to do this more often.

7. Do not use your fabric cutting scissors or shears for cutting paper. Instead select one of the items recommended for this purpose such as an inexpensive pair of scissors or perhaps, one of your older pair. Paper is a wood product and it dulls the blades.

8. When the fabric starts to move forward while cutting, it is time to have your scissors sharpened by a professional scissors sharpener who can bring those cutting blade angles back to manufactuer's specifications.

Nice to have someone 'in the know' confirm things that people often say or dispute :)

Thanks for the tips! I'm pretty careful with mine, but I'd not thought of the oiling tip. We live in a dry climate, so probably a good idea.
