I was just curious tonight to find out if the kind of quilts we make are tied in to where we live, in a visual way. As in, do they reflect the colors and patterns you find in your surroundings, when you look out your window?

If you live by the water, do you use wavy lines, and lots of blue?

Or if you live in the city, do your quilts have lots of straight lines and angles?

Desert quilters, are you using earthy colors?

If you live in the woods or on the prairie, are you drawn to greens and golds?

In what ways do your quilts tie in to where you live?

In my case, I gravitate to patterns that remind me of home (MN). I do not find that many of them in the South so when I do, I tend to get them. With that said, I have not completed one, but am working on collecting fabric for a Loon in a Sunset wall hanging. I also am waiting on some Loon fabric that my Mom has picked up for me. I have a quilt planed for that also. :D

Well, I live in the South, but I tend to make quilts out of whatever catches my fancy. I love old-timey looking quilts, but I think that's just a personal preference kinda thing, not necessarily a location thing. At this time, I'm into floral's, and small prints. :)

I suppose in one sense they do. Blue has always been my favorite color and I live in MI surrounded by the beauty of the Great Lakes. But most of my quilts are really eclectic and scrappy looking as well. In homage to the working class nature of SE MI, I do prefer to make mine functional and don't worry about "heirloom" quilting. I want people to use my quilts not just put them up to look at.

Live near the ocean, love anything that reminds me of the beauty of the ocean. The colors and the power the ocean has.

Interesting thought! I do love earth tones and colors that reflect midwest scenery, never thought of why. I have never made southwestern styles or much modern. Maybe that's connected to my culture. Who knows?

Yes, I like scrappy and I live on a farm, never have had a "theme" or a matching decor so I would say yes.

I'm still working on my first quilt, but tend to like vintage quilts in soft calico colors, simple quilt stitching. I'm thinking it reminds me of when I was young and all was good, and safe, and warm, and loving.
