You really need the book or a class to learn how to join the blocks. Once you have the method down, you can make your own pattern. I made mine with larger squares to start out, so didn't need quite so much fabric. But I made the front with scrappy sashes, and the back all scrappy,and it was tough to keep that all straight. I got two red squares next to each other. They were not supposed to be.
But it was fun to learn a new process.
