Default shops in upstate NY, Montreal & Toronto??

I'm leaving in 2 weeks for a train trip to Syracuse/Albany area and then Montreal & Toronto (and Niaguara Falls) with my daughter. Any "must see" quilt shops I need to visit??

Have fun! In Syracuse, visit Calico Gals (www.calicogals.com) and Mission Rose (www.missionrosequiltery.com). In Albany, Flying Geese Fabrics in Colonie (on corner of New Karner Road and Watervliet Road), and The Joyful Quilter in Glenville (just west of Schenectady) (www.joyfulquilter.com). Two other shops that are worth visiting, if you are driving from Albany to Syracuse to Toronto are the Quiltbug in Esperance, NY (on U.S. Rt 20, west of Albany) and a very large and great store, The Gloversville Sewing Center in Gloversville, north of the Fonda/Fultonville exit on the Thruway--well worth the visit there. (www.gloversvillesewingcenter.com) There are also some good shops in the Rochester area. I can't help you for Canada. Carolyn

If you hit Rochester, try Patricia's , Jackie Lynn's,. Hartland is on RT. 104. In Lockport, try Marie's.

I would not consider Flying Geese a "must see" shop. It is ok but definitely not worth going out of your way to see. Goversville Sewing Center, OTH definitely is.

While a bit on the spendy side, Log Cabin fabrics in Ravena has a very nice selection.

there is also a 70 store shop hop going on in NYS thru September 2. Here is a comprehensive list of all the participating shops so this will help you plan stops.

Wow! Thanks, ladies--hope I hear from some Canadian quilters on what to expect in Montreal and Toronto! I've been collecting fabric that represents the different places I've visited in the last few years with plans to make an "Around the World" pattern.

No, Flying Geese has apparently changed hands and is closed much of the time. Looks like they are going out of business. Yes to Gloversville.

. No, Flying Geese changed hands and it looks looks like they are going out of business. Yes to Gloversville and Quiltbug. If you like Civil War repros or are interested in antique quilts, they are the owner's speciality.

In Toronto, check out Sew Sisters. It is on Chesswood Ave. www.sew-sisters.com Also, you might want to check out Lens Mill. They have an outlet on Orfus Rd. www.lensmill.com should get you their website. The stores are huge with lots of 'other' stuff, but lots of fabric too.

Be ready for sticker shock in Canada. Our prices are significantly higher than the US, and in Ontario, you also have 13% HST added. Painful I know, but there are also bargains out there.

Were you planning on going as far as Kitchener/Waterloo? There is a great farmers' market called St. Jacobs, every Tues, Thurs and Sat. Definitely worth a visit. There is also a fabric store at the market. And three km. from the market is the village of St. Jacobs. It has a couple of very nice fabric shops. One is Riechards (www.reichards.com/) ‎but I don't remember the name of the other. BTW, there is also a Lens Mill in Kitchener.

Hope you have a great vacation and find a few gems along the way.
