Default Jean Quilt Top/Flannel Back - Need batting?

Hello - I am thinking of making a jean quilt top (not rag) with flannel backing. Do I still need to use batting in between? Thanks in advance for your input.

You can make the quilt without batting, no problem. In the south, they make lightweight quilts with a pieced cotton top, no batting, and flannel on the back. Depends on how warm you want it to be. Don't know if you live in a cold climate or not. Also, batting will add weight, don't know how large a quilt you are making.

Unless you want it super warm, seems denim and flannel would be just fine without batting, especially if you don't like really heavy quilts.

I live in New York so we have cold winters. I think I will be making it a twin size at the least. My concern was the weight of the quilt but wasn't absolutely sure if I can eliminate the batting altogether. Thanks for the input!

I have made quilts without batting... but there have been some of my non-batting quilts where I wish I would have used batting. Flannel is soft, but sometimes denim can have bulky seams.. and the batting would had helped soften those seams while I was cuddling the quilt

I use a layer of flannel just to make the quilt softer. On cold nights I can layer 2 or 3 to keep me and the dog warm. Denim quilts are perfect for the car and for picnics and hold up to the many washings. My mother made a couple of denim and gingham bed quilts many years ago that held up forever .... I think she may have used lightweight cotton or flannel as batting on those too.

I made a rag one with jeans and flannel, no batting, but it was very heavy. DS loved it.

depends on how lofty & warm you want it- if you live in the south where it tends to be warmer or you like 'flat' quilts don't bother- if you like your quilts to be really warm & lofty then use batting...there is no 'right' answer it's a personal choice- either way makes nice quilts.

I made a denim rag quilt without batting and cotton. It is heavy. Get your top together and then cover up with it. You won't need batting.

I made a rag quilt from heavy denim jeans and heavy weight (chamois) flannel. Itt is only 45 x 69 inches and it weighs over
six pounds.

I did not put any batting init.
