    Default Good Sewing Thread

What is the best thread to use when sewing on your quilt seams. Lately I have been having trouble with coats&clark white cotton not breaking but sort of fraying and having to stop and re-thread several times during sewing, new needle & everything working fine except for that, any suggestion on better thread. Tk, JU.

I use Aurifil. My machine doesn't seem to like Coats & Clark-it shreds every time. If I have to buy something right away I'll get Gutterman.

You could try a bigger needle. With a #12 I had shredding problems with Connecting Threads thread but it's not as bad with a #14.

I use Gutermann cotton 50 wt and never have a problem with it. I use it for piecing and quilting.

If your thread is fraying you need a different size or type of needle different types have different eyes may cause it... The wrong size for the weight of thread will cause fraying too...that being said... My machine does not accept coats & Clark thread for some reason. I use thread from Connecting Threads and Aurifil thread most of the time

The Coats and Clark 100% cotton thread on the cardboard spools is 30 wt thread. Try a larger needle like a 90/14, the change should solve your problem.

Presencia 60-weight, 3-ply, 100% cotton is my favorite thread for piecing. You can use a size 70 to 75 needle with it.

You can get a million different, well maybe not that many answers to this question as to what is the best thread.

My favorite is Metler 100% cotton, with silk-finish. 2nd is Guterman.

    I piece with Bottom Line.

Having said that, I agree with others who suggest a larger needle, or at least one with a larger eye, such as a topstitch.
