I do my best piecing with Aurifil 50wt 2-ply. Agree with others that the needle you are using may be too small or the wrong type for the size of thread you have.

My machine does not like Coats or Floriani. I am currently in LOVE with Connecting Threads Essentials for piecing. It's a 50/3 thread, so I use an 80/12 topstitch machine needle. They recently had a sale where a 1,200 yard spool was only $1.95, so I stocked up. But even the regular price of $2.79 is still quite a bargain!

It's important to know the weight and ply and content of thread then you have to select the needle size and type of needle for that thread. I use 2 ply 50wt or use a 60wt or higher for piecing. The thinner the bobbin thread the better. I don't try to match my bobbin thread to the top thread in wt. or brand. Doesn't make a difference to me. I use titanium coated topstitch needles. It's easy to find the wt and ply info for thread by going to the website of the thread if it isn't on the spool. Right now I'm using Aurifil for the top (because I have a lot of it) and prewound Sew Fine bobbins from Superior Thread with a size 80 topstitch needle.

I use the Mettler silk finish thread. All of my machines do well with it.

I agree. This isn't the 80s anymore when just a few threads were available. I use Mettler Silk finished because that is what my Bernina dealership recommended for my Bernina 1530 back in the 90s.

Yes, I love Presencia 60/3. I use it with my Berninas and with my Featherweights. I bought a cone of the 4 basics (white, black, ecru and grey) about 3 years ago, and have still not finished a cone. I usually use an 80/12 needle for piecing and don't have any problems. I wind all my bobbins with the Presencia, too.

I get mine from Harriet Hargraves' website.

For everyone who loves to use Aurifil, Massdrop is having a drop right now (ends in 5 days) for a dozen Aurifil spools in a variety of colours. They have four packs for sale right now. All are 50wt, 1,300m (1422yard) spools.
