Default Piecing a label into a quilt back?

The thread about piecing a quilt back made me think...why do I stitch labels on at the end? Why don't I just piece them directly into the back somewhere?

I realize lining it up might be tricky, but not if I put it somewhere in the middle!

I often will do at least one stripe of pieced blocks from the front of the quilt into the backing...I don't know why it never occurred to me before that one of those blocks could be the label. Then it's DEFINITELY secure!

Am I just missing some big obvious drawback as to why this would be a bad idea?

I do not think it is a bad idea. I have always put mine in one corner just out of habit. Kind of like an artist signing a painting. Go ahead and put it where you want.

If it's pieced into the quilt back then the quilting lines will probably go through the label. Sometimes that's a good thing keeps the label from being removed), sometimes not. It's one rationale for adding the label later.

I've seen it before. Can't remember where though.

I was thinking about it as well and I'll probably do it sometime in the future. So far I've only printed one batch of labels and added them to the different quilts all at once.

I agree with this sentiment.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I have been putting them on before quilting but this seems even better.

The last quilt I made I had one small wrinkle in my quilt backing... in the middle but, luckily at the bottom edge... I stitched that quilt label right over the top of that darned wrinkle!! I had been sooo upset that I had a wrinkle in the backing... this resolved that issue, then I was very happy with my quilt!

I have always tried to piece one in the back unless I am using a wide back.

A lot of quilters who's quilts are in competition thus often shipped often include the label in the backing.

I have a friend who always pieces her label in or appliques it on the back before quilting. I will try to get a picture. She is extremely creative and always does fun labels and gives her quilts some quirky names. When it is quilted it has never seemed to interfere with it.
