Default Life Expectancy of Computerized SM

I saw a CL ad for a Janome MC 10000 and it appears to have been bought new in 2001. It is listed for $1000. Is it even worthwhile considering buying a 13 year old compterized sewing/embriodery machine ?

I have a designer I Viking that I got USED in the 90's and is still going strong. When I want to check a price, I look at SOLD listings on ebay. The MC 10000 is going for around $600.

I would be very very careful when paying $1000 for anything 13 years old. If the computer has gone bad, the machine would either be useless or need an expensive repair. Why are they selling it. $1000 can buy a very nice new machine IMHO. Your LQS may have gently used machines that have been gone over by their repair fellow and they usually stand behind their machines. I am very skeptical of CL.

I think the price is way too high. Ebay prices are typically inflated anyway, so to use the ebay price as a guide I wouldn't feel comfortable paying more than $300 or $400. I would also agree that buying a used machine from a local dealer would be a better bet as you can sometimes get them to offer an in store warranty for a year or so on the used machine you buy.

Can't speak about the price specifics of that machine. But I will tell you my Viking 950 Platinum is going strong 12-15 years later. As someone else mentioned, check SOLD ebay listings for reasonable price to pay. Then check what others are going for on CL as well.

We had a ad on our CL for a very nice looking Bernina. Turns out it was a scam. Luckily it was found out before anyone bought it, but I had planned on looking at it. Be very careful. Never wire money. Cash only, don't go by yourself and try it out first. Take a large young man with you at the very least.

I purchased my pfaff 7570 in 2001. The sewing machine portion works beautifully. The embroidery machine part picks and chooses when it wants to work. A couple of years ago, I took the embroidery unit in for repair and of course that's when he (cuz it's a brat) chose to work. They found nothing wrong with it on two different occasions.

I paid $1000 for my Juki F600 brand new from my dealer, with a warranty.

I have the mc 10001, and they did cost a lot new. It's 9 yrs old and I had no trouble with it. Great machine. Would I by the 10000 ? No, not for $1,000.00. If it was really cheap, maybe. Why,because the technology is getting old for the embroidery. And this is really a pain to deal with. I think if the screen goes it's $500.00 to replace. Go for something newer. The 11000se would be much better, and they are starting to drop in price.
